What are you going to learn?

This course will provide you a thorough understanding of the flexibility markets and mechanisms in the Netherlands.

You will learn about the different balancing markets FCR, aFRR and mFRR and about indirect flex, asset backed trading, demand side response and the emerging role of batteries and virtual power plants.

We will explain how the different markets work and what asset types are suitable for which markets.

We will look at the key policies impacting flexibility services and we cover various business models and examples. You will also work on business models yourself.

We finish with barriers like congestion and possible ways to solve them. Finally we provide a future outlook for the market.

you know all the ins- and outs of the flexibility markets and the latest developments around flex. You can use this knowledge in your work on the trade floor.

  1. The energy transition; what is changing and what are the challenges (e.g. grid balancing problems, congestion, price volatility). Possible solutions.
  2. Balancing markets; FCR, aFRR, mFRR. How do these markets work, what is the difference, what assets can be used on which market.
  3. Indirect flex and asset backed trading. How can this can be combined with balancing products.
  4. Demand side response: what is it, how can it be used, examples, business models
  5. Congestion; what is it, the latest developments, possible solutions and examples.
  6. Batteries; types of batteries, on what markets can batteries be used.
  7. Virtual power plants; wat is it and how can they be used
  8. The latest developments.
